To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a timeless classic, about a young girl who narrates her life in Maycomb County, and the hardships that are in it. However, it is also about family, and her father, Atticus. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout, and from the very beginning we see that they love him.

He is a great role model for the kids, although he has lost his wife and he has to raise the kids alone during the Great Depression , he stays strong. Atticus is extremely intelligent, and, no matter the circumstances, he cares greatly for his children. Now to elaborate more on how his kids love him. Atticus Finch is a father beloved by his children. This fact is clearly shown throughout the book as Jem and Scout wait by the post office for Atticus and only want his upmost approval. Not only that, but they care for his well-being, like when they followed him to the jail house the night before the court trial, and how they stepped in to save him.

This really displays the bond between the father and his children. He is not only intelligent with the kids, but with the knowledge of Macomb. His family is one of the oldest in the county, and he knows everyone in the small town by name, knowing their class, struggles, and difficulties in life. If Atticus did not have this kind of knowledge in the book, I doubt he would be as much of a noteworthy character as he is now. Atticus knows about his kids, but he also cares for them. He doesn't like criminal law, yet he accepts the appointment to Tom Robinson's case.

He knows before he begins that he's going to lose this case, but that doesn't stop him from giving Tom the strongest defense he possibly can. And, importantly, Atticus doesn't put so much effort into Tom's case because he's an African American, but because he is innocent. Atticus feels that the justice system should be color blind, and he defends Tom as an innocent man, not a man of color. Atticus is the adult character least infected by prejudice in the novel. He has no problem with his children attending Calpurnia's church, or with a black woman essentially raising his children. He admonishes Scout not to use racial slurs, and is careful to always use the terms acceptable for his time and culture. He goes to Helen's home to tell her of Tom's death, which means a white man spending time in the black community.

Other men in town would've sent a messenger and left it at that. His lack of prejudice doesn't apply only to other races, however. He is unaffected by Mrs. Dubose's caustic tongue, Miss Stephanie Crawford's catty gossip, and even Walter Cunningham's thinly veiled threat on his life. He doesn't retaliate when Bob Ewell spits in his face because he understands that he has wounded Ewell's pride — the only real possession this man has. Atticus accepts these people because he is an expert at "climb[ing] into [other people's] skin and walk[ing] around in it.

In To Kill a Mockingbird , children live in an inventive world where mysteries abound but little exists to actually cause them harm. Scout and Jem spend much of their time inventing stories about their reclusive neighbor Boo Radley, gleefully scaring themselves before rushing to the secure, calming presence of their father, Atticus.

As the novel progresses, however, the imaginary threat that Boo Radley poses pales in comparison to the real dangers Jem and Scout encounter in the adult world. The games and stories Jem and Scout create around Boo Radley depict him as a source of violence and danger. However, the children are able to indulge in wild imaginings and take what they perceive as risky chances only because they feel completely safe in the care of Atticus, who protects them from a dark, dangerous world. The threatening, menacing Boo thus remains firmly entrenched in their childhood worldview, where adults are infallible and all-powerful. For the first time, adults are frightened and sad along with the children, and therefore cannot be counted on to provide security or refuge.

Boo Radley, once such a threatening presence, now seems like a remnant of a more innocent time. The contrast between then and now seems all the more stark because Boo Radley remains in their lives, a constant reminder of how things had been before. Faced with real dangers, Jem and Scout must tap into new levels of maturity in order to deal with tragedy, new social challenges, and increased familial expectations. As their relationship with Atticus and the larger adult community changes, their relationship with Boo changes as well. Once an imagined enemy and a source of perceived danger, Boo transforms into a true friend and ally, helping them at crucial moments in their transition from childhood to maturity.
